A wealth rooted in Southern Italy that over the years has collected successes, becoming one of the flagship wines of our country.

Characteristics of Aglianico Wine

Organic aglianico wine is obtained from organic grapes that do not use the addition of sulfites. The tools used in organic farming allow obtaining juices that encapsulate all the characteristics of the grape with the lowest content of preservatives and all those components foreign to the wine itself. Organic IGP aglianico wine stands out for its intense red color. The characteristics of aglianico wine give rise to a broad structure of spicy notes. Specifically, this particular type of wine presents, especially in the early years, a color that tends towards shades of purple that then intensify over the years until it becomes ruby red. Clayey soils generate vineyards with late maturation but with constant productivity, which is why its refined taste, hiding the scent of raspberries and violets, achieves perfect harmony. Dry and full-bodied, it is considered the king of the South with deep and rooted origins.

The Origin of Aglianico: Where and How it is Produced

The origin of aglianico wine is perhaps unknown to most. Its origin from Greece has connected this particular wine and the origin of its name to a distortion by the Aragonese of Southern Italy from Hellenic to Eglienico. Others believe instead that the name of aglianico wine has its origins in the city of Elea (a polis of Magna Graecia). Its history is ancient but not entirely certified, nevertheless today aglianico remains an Italian grape variety with specific and well-structured characteristics.

Where Aglianico Wine is Produced

In recent years, vineyards have also been introduced in California and Australia, but its undisputed homeland remains the Bel Paese. Aglianico wines are born in the sunny lands of Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, and Molise and bring their elegant structure throughout the world. Its production, in the Campania region, is mainly rooted in the areas of Avellino where the remarkable temperature variations and the height of the lands (volcanic and clayey) give rise to cultivations that express to the maximum all the intensity of the characteristics of this juice. The same happens for the area of Benevento where the climatic characteristics guarantee the same intense structure to the internationally renowned wine. Basilicata is no less, in fact, the aglianico wine from Vulture produced in the lands rich in tuff is well known.

How Aglianico Wine is Made

Red aglianico wine has a structure and a history that must be respected, making it the most famous in the world, especially for the care of its vineyard. Throughout the year, accurate work is done on the vineyards to ensure their harvest. Pruning is done twice a year, embracing one period in summer and one in winter. This, together with the treatments done to the vineyard, guarantees an excellent red aglianico wine. The phases are as follows:

  • grape harvesting, which is done from October to early November. All this adds to the deep knowledge of the vineyards and respect for the originating territories that stimulate the entire winemaking process;
  • pressing, which delicately crushes the grapes to extract all the necessary juice from them;
  • vinification, which in this case involves a distinction between white and red right after pressing;
  • then comes the maturation and aging of the wine, to be understood as the one in traditional amphorae until then the passage in bottles.

For this particular nectar, it is important to understand when to bottle aglianico wine, which follows a precise and detailed timing: in the months of September or in the spring months. The process of making wine with aglianico grapes is slow and delicate, but the result obtained is truly impeccable.
